USA First Lady Visits Zambia
United States of America First Lady Laura Bush arrived in Zambia on Wednesday 27th June 2007 for a two day visit to inspect a number of HIV/AIDS and other related projects. Accompanied by First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa, Laura Bush visited a number of multi-billion dollar programs funded by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) initiated by President George Bush in 2003 and the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) programs.
Ms Bush commended first lady Maureen Mwanawasa for her contributions to the fight against HIV and AIDS. Mrs Bush praised her Zambian counterpart for the good leadership exhibited as Chair of the Organization of First African Ladies against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA). She also commended UN Special Envoy to Africa Mrs. Elizabeth Mataka. Laura Bush donated US$ 300,000 to OAFLA under PEPFAR and USAID. She announced the provision of 500,000 mosquito nets to be distributed to vulnerable groups, pregnant women and children in particular.
Mrs. Bush also visited Senegal, Mali and Mozambique.
Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) Day 2007
In Zambia, 30th June is recognized as mass Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) Day. VCT is considered as the entry point to treatment care and support. It also provides the districts with opportunities to increase access to information about other HIV/AIDS prevention measures whilst calling upon wider partnerships.
On 30th June 2007, hundreds of people celebrated Mass VCT Day which was characterized by VCT services, information fairs, drama performances poetry, and March Pasts. All 72 districts held mass VCT events with Ndola district hosting the national event. The national event was graced by the Minister of Health Honorable Brigadier General Brain Chituwo. Lusaka district celebrations were honored by the presence of the First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa and her US counterpart Mrs. Laura Bush.
